Interior Architecture Studio 3: Design Exploration

Semester I and II 2021 - Swinburne University

From the lens of Urban Interiors the studio introduced to the students the urban strategy of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) to redesign their university campus. The first part of the semester the students worked on three mini-projects driving them from the perceptual self-knowledge of what it means "safety" to the objective site documentation. The students visited the sites, conducted observations, and mapped out their sites through several visits.

Interior Architecture Studio 3: Design Exploration

Semester II 2019 - Swinburne University

We sense space and alter our behaviour  to adapt our perceptions of it through an understanding forged by sight, sound, touch and smell. Perception of these characteristics establishes our orientation and guides the way we navigate space. In this studio we will examine Swinburne Campus to consider what makes a space perceived as ‘safe’ or ‘unsafe’ and what strategies may be employed to improve ‘perception’. You will propose a design intervention to improve safety around Hawthorn’s Swinburne campus.

Cross-Cultural Social Design Strategy

Semester II 2018 - Swinburne University

The unit outlines the importance of designing with and for different cultures, groups and communities. It addresses approaches to business planning and design strategy for social enterprise through case studies and briefs. This unit also examines Indigenous methodologies, knowledges and perspectives, which can be incorporated as part of culturally sensitive design solutions.

Community Training

Site visits and assessments

Gathering on-site data enables the opportunity to collect information not captured by other means, as well as evaluate insightful environmental datasets.

Community engagement strategies

Working collaboratively with communities bridges the gap between their needs and expectations with the designer intentions. The photo shown above demonstrates a community walk in a neighbourhood with safety issues.
